When the fire whispers your name, how do you answer?
Dr. Pamela Forrest is determined to bring Julia's memories to the surface, hoping to heal Julia's panic disorder. The therapist keeps returning Julia to a night twenty-three years ago when Julia was four. A night of hooded figures, strange chants, pain, and blood. The night her father disappeared from the face of the earth.
But the line between the past and the present begins to blur. Julia finds a silver skull ring that bears the name "Judas Stone" and her fellow journalist Rick O'Dell is investigating a suspected ritual murder.
Someone is leaving strange messages inside her house, even though the door is locked. The handyman Walter spends a lot of time in the woods behind her house. Her romance with her boyfriend Mitchell grows uneasy. And the cop who investigated the mystery of her father's disappearance has followed her to the small Appalachian town of Elkwood.
Now she has a head full of memories, but she doesn't know which are real. As the shadows of Julia's panic grow larger and darker, she' needs to trust one of the men in her life.
And the wrong choice may not only cost her heart and her life, but her soul as well.

The Skull Ring A Screenplay edition by Scott Nicholson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was a real page turner. I would put it down and have to pick it up again. The suspense was on going. I would recommend this book.
I enjoyed this story but I had difficulty latching on and I am not quite sure why. I am surprised by this as I enjoy anything that involves cults or psychology. Because of this, it seemed to take forever to finish.
*Per my Goodreads review
I really liked the intense therapy sessions between Julia and her therapist Dr. Forrest. I thought the dialogue was awesome and interesting! However, I was not liking the direction the book was going and I became disgusted and disappointed. I thought this book had great potential but it got stupid, and the overuse of the word "creep" was getting annoying! I quit after reading I think around 20%.
Some typos and repeated words (like multiple uses of the word `Creeps' - seriously, it was getting annoying, as another member pointed out), but dragged me in immediately.
I ate it up and wanted to know more. What did the `bad men' really do when Julia was a toddler? What role does her father play in her psychiatric episodes? Are they really episodes though, or are they something more real?
And what I REALLY wanted to know, even more than Julia's father, is what her therapist Dr. Forrest ACTUALLY knows about Julia's past.
And her fiancée, Mitchell.
And every single other person who crops up. Okay, not every person, but I felt like I'm the one jumping at shadows, not Julia.
About 75% through, I was getting bored, but the ending was near. It was not as anticlimactic or as terrible as I feared. It did make me realize just how much symbolism Nicholson used throughout the entire story.
Julia has some attachment issues, especially with breaking such attachments. While it bothers me, it's believable given her past.
There are many mentions of God and belief in Him vs. belief in the devil. Satan worship is the overall theme, but it's moreso in an informational way. I don't know Nicholson's religious views, but I liked the more Godly parts of the story. Especially with the comparison between waiting for something more after death and being selfish, living in the here-and-now no matter what.
4 stars because of how it drew me in, but I'd really give it 3.5
Julia Stone moved from Memphis to a small town in North Carolina four months before Scott Nicholson's The Skull Ring opens a quieter atmosphere, a less stressful job, a new therapist. Dr. Forrest has been helping Julia deal with her panic attacks, the black fear that greets her when she comes home to an empty house, the paranoid delusions. Everyone she passes on the street, everyone who comes to her door, could be one of them, the hooded bad men--the "creeps"--who tried to kill her as a child, who have been haunting her since, rearranging knick knacks in her absence, making her electronics malfunction. Or not. Granted the nightmare was real when she was four years old, but after that it's all been in her head...or so she has to keep reminding herself. No one really came in through the window while she was out she must have forgotten to close it....
Much of The Skull Rings plays out in Julia's mind as she assesses her fears, trying to hold on to reality when the bad things going on around her seem too real to dismiss as delusions. She's torn in one direction by her therapist, but a smothering fiancé back home in Memphis is dismissive of her attempts to deal with the past by confronting it. And then there is Walter the handyman, who may be a human manifestation of infernal evil, or may just have shown up to check her windows. One never knows in Julia's world.
I had a few small quibbles with Nicholson's book. Some background information on Satanism at about the halfway point slows down the narrative, and there's a fair amount of Julia's contemplation to wade through--not only her wondering if she's crazy, but also her reflections on God and Satan. Julia also has a conversation with her neighbor early on that seems disjointed, almost as if a few lines have been mistakenly omitted from the narrative. But on the whole The Skull Ring is a good, tense read. It certainly starts out with a bang. And it's riddled with nice phrasing you'll want to pause to appreciate.

This review has been months in the writing because I have no desire to discourage an author with obvious talent, but I must be honest and stress that I believe this novel was not print ready. The main character seemed little more than a rag doll. Perhaps with more time and work, Mr. Nicholson could have breathed life into this wisp of a creature that floated about the story having things done to her. Parts of this novel refused to hold my attention. Hoping to propel myself into more compelling sections of the book, I found it necessary to jump over huge blocks and even pages of uninteresting text that a professional editor would have insisted be cut. My suggestion to Mr. Nicholson would be, "Pull this book from the market, and place it in the hands of a discerning editor, who with the skill of a surgeon, will cut away those things that keep "The Skull Ring" from actually becoming a best seller. And please, please, please, stop using the word CREEP."
It was a very fast paced book with a lot of twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting . The characters were very well developed and complex . I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it for those who enjoy this type of reading material . Scott Nicholson is a very gifted and successful author and I highly recommend his many other books as well as this one . .
